ON1 Effect 10.5 is a powerful photo editing tool that works as a stand-alone software and also as a plug-in for Photoshop, Lightroom, Elements and Apple Photos. Using it as a more general photo-finishing program comes with a steep learning curve and little assistance, and for all that you’ll still be missing some basic capabilities. In the end, I feel it’s what it claims to be: a program for applying special effects - via the presets. It can be a bit daunting, especially for someone who might not be familiar with common post-processing functions and terminology. Many filters have presets of their own to try to make them easier to use. There are hundreds of filters in 25 categories that you can choose from, each with its own set of adjustments. Once you get beyond the presets, this is a complicated program. I imagine that the Film presets are one of the most popular categories. For my taste, many of the presets are over-the-top, and many of the rest seem to be of novelty value only. It comes with over 400 presets in over 30 categories built-in, and more can be downloaded with the “Preset > Get More Presets…” menu option. Within that limitation, though, it’s pretty powerful. You do have masking capabilities, but no cropping, no rotation, no resizing, no clone or healing tools, no compositing of multiple images, no watermarking, nothing like that. And I'm curious to see how often I choose this tool over the other options. I like the interface and the convenience. It really depends on which tool you like the best. You can roundtrip from Aperture to CS5 or Elements, or use a plug-in. Keep in mind that Photoshop Elements also has layers capability, however. As I always say in my workshops, you want to use the native Aperture tools as much as possible, and save plug-ins for only when you need them.įor photographers who don't want to make the full investment for Photoshop CS5 but wants the ability to work with layers in Lightroom or Aperture, Perfect Layers represents an alternative. My original horse shot is 27 MBs in the Aperture library. Perfect Layers isn't for you're everyday photos. Once you're finished with the work, your only options are to go to the menu, or just close the window and wait for the dialog box that asks you if you want to save. I also think onOne needs to add a "Save" and "Cancel" buttons to the interface. Performance was OK, but the plug-in did seem to tax my MacBook Air, which usually handles my photography apps quite well. If not, you might want to spend some time in the How To section on the onOne site. Working in Perfect Layers is fairly intuitive if you've worked in Photoshop. That allowed me to pump up the landscape without overdoing it on the main subject. ![]() So I used the Hard Light blending mode, then "painted out" the effect on the horse. ![]() I wanted to add a little punch to this countryside shot from Virginia. Then you can play with blending modes and painting to create the effect you want. If you're working with a single image, the first thing you'll want to do is copy it to create a new layer. Once there, you have a streamlined, but very capable version of the layers functionality that was originally created by Adobe for Photoshop. You can select one file, or multiple images to open in Perfect Layers. It takes a few seconds to create the Photoshop file and present it to you in a new window. I loaded up this plug-in into Aperture 3 on my MacBook Air to take it for a quick test drive.Īfter installation, Perfect Layers is available via Photos > Edit with Plug-in.
